Material Legacies of Slavery: Scottish history zine
A fold out map with information about 11 houses in the Scottish Borders with connections to historic slave ownership.
This research and mapping project was inspired by the English National Trust’s important project to examine slavery links in their historical houses, and is also a response to the Commission of Race and Ethnic Disparities report, published March 2021, which urged educators not to teach the history of structural inequality. This disingenuous appeal to ‘meritocracy’ ignores the generational wealth of the British elites, which is founded on exploitation, and is materialised in brick and stone.
This A6 zine folds out into an illustrated information sheet, intended to raise awareness and inspire further research.
A single sheet mini-zine, printed in black on light grey paper, approx 10 x 15cm, unfolding to 30 x 21 cm.
